A Village Art Gallery with a Northern Soul
Nestled in the heart of Suttons Bay, Michigan, The Painted Bird showcases a curated collection of handcrafted art, jewelry, textiles and home décor by local and regional artists.

Our Story
The Painted Bird’s roots trace back to 1987, when Owen Bahle encouraged talented textile artist Carol Bawden to turn her artistic vision into a storefront. At the time, the Bahle family had just completed the Sogge Building, which became the very first location of The Painted Bird.
After just two years, Bawden relocated The Painted Bird to its current spot beside The Bay movie theater, moving into a newly renovated space alongside other thriving businesses.
In time, Carol Bawden passed the torch to Kathy Dittenbir, a Traverse City resident and lifelong art collector.
